Rear windows are made from toughened glass which breaks into small pieces and falls to the ground if damaged. The thickened lamination provides an extra safety barrier by holding the glass together in the event of breakage. This is particularly useful when  towing as stones can hit the trailer and bounce back to the rear window smashing the glass.
